One of various views of individual capital, Daniel Pink's autonomy/mastery/purpose (RSA animation) model unifies some surprising truths about motives and rewards. For instance, persons rewarded with more money for the same task tend to perform worse than those who make less.
A lot of talk has been spawned by it [1] [2] [3]. All economists back to Adam Smith, and plenty of others including George Bernard Shaw and William Shakespeare and Margaret Mead) all commented on initiative, and various theories of "Passion Capital" (distinct from Hakim's "erotic capital" [4], more closely related to Florida's Creative Class [5]. Pink however is trying to analyze the systematic advantage of:
- autonomy - having the power to do what you think you need to do
- mastery - being able to pursue excellence in what you think you need to learn
- purpose - having a deep emotional investment in the final results
