A blog is a simple bad user interface on an RSS feed, typically one that exists only to populate others' blogroll. See spam similarly.
Legitimate use of blogs include
- providing annotated links to others
- providing first person accounts, like a diary, of a person in an unusual position
- responding to concerns arising from one's own work, where one could legitimately claim to be the authority, e.g. Lawrence Lessig's dialogue about his own works.
They are a poor third choice for tagging web pages that non-editable, since other web services specific to tagging serve that purpose. See open tag. A wiki does this far better since any use of category as tag creates reliable tags.
In wikis a talk page is attached to every other page. Use them and please do not ask for blog support. This wiki shouldn't be bloggy.
Only one blog admits that its only purpose is to demonstrate why blogs should not exist, and it was written by Craig Hubley. Though it does sometimes point to useful things blogs do in some fields, it makes clear that everyone blogging is probably the worst idea ever thought of.
