Govern reflectively
From eg
The most important wiki best practice is to align goals with those of sponsoring organizations. However, the phase in which one may govern absolutely (as a GodKing) tends to be temporary.
Once efforts to socialize taxonomy are underway and everyone understands them to be mandatory (see five levels of intranet), it becomes possible to govern reflectively. Issue statements can be synchronized into coherent issue/position/arguments for resolution (group acceptance of one position) on governance and standards questions, i.e. how does wiki governance relate to organizational roles? How are orgniazation protocols implemented?
There are essentially two ways to govern reflectively:
- “socializing” the governance taxonomy within the organization to ensure that it is effective enough that no needed faction is concerned enough to fork off
- letting the incompetent be driven off by trolls, acknowledging that trolls have taken over and using trollish to dynamically socialize new terms
To govern reflexively is much more difficult and probably requires ultra-reflexive pressures, e.g. need to apply legal category.
