"First they ignore me. Then they laugh at me. Then they fight me. Then I win." - Gandhi

The living ontology pattern ignore/laugh/fight/win recognizes that the nature of peacemaking is win-win, accordingly the conflict ceases when the attacker realizes that s/he doesn't win any more by fighting.

The political virtues will usually be required to ensure the enemy realizes this.

Carol Moore studied Gandhi from a systems theory perspective and concluded that he was not only serving as moral example but had actually discovered some operational distinctions that disabled enemy responses to his actions and allies.

Contrast Richard Nixon, Sun Tzu, Starhawk, Buddha, Miyamoto Musashi and Lao Tze. Gandhi's method, satyagraha, also involved creating alternate institutions and other nonviolent tactics.
